Think of Ron Dutton’s medallic work and the words, landscape, clouds, flying and sheep all come to mind. From the personal to the cosmic, the scope of Dutton’s imagination is immense.
Simmons Gallery are pleased to be able to offer in our latest art medal auction (MB82) a selection of Ron Dutton’s cast bronze medals, sculptures to hold in your hand. Winner of the FIDEM Grand Prix in 2016, Ron Dutton is a well loved and collected sculptor and medallist (see previous post). However, we seem to have a mini-exhibition online of his landscapes, ranging from the early works, like Seascape Storm Clouds pictured here to the middle period pieces, like Corn Sweep (1981) showing the rhythms and forms made by working the land.
Some of earliest medals are very personal views of artist’s garden from his studio – like Nest Box (lot 32) but there is always experimentation in texture, colour and patina. This love of colour becomes more evident as the years go by as does the leitmotif of viewing the landscape from the top of a hill or mountain, and from there it is but a small step to the cosmic imaginings of the new century, such as Ascending Blue (2005 – lot 57),
and Star Station (2002 – lot 54). All the bronzes are in limited editions mainly of 20 but sometimes greater, like his 1982 Horizons High – Sheep Moor 2 inaugural medal for the British Art Medal Society which is also in the sale (lot 2). However, it is noticeable that most of of the edition numbers in the sale are low – many of the medals have not been offered elsewhere so it’s a great opportunity to add some beautiful gems to your collection.
Auction sale MB82 for medals closes for bids on 28 September at 12 noon BST
